Info on our IRC network
The CompSoc IRC network is the hub of the society; where many of our members socialise and much interesting conversation can be had. You don’t have to be a member to come and talk to us!
- Server: irc.uwcs.co.uk
- Port: 6667 or 6668–6669
The official society channel is #compsoc, and there are other secondary channels, such as #wuglug for the GNU/Linux User Group, #gaming for those interested in gaming, and #tech for the techteam.
To connect, you will need an IRC client. Xchat, mirc and irssi are popular examples used by many of our members, but there are also web based clients such as Mibbit which save you from installing any additional software.
IRC bot
Some enterprising members of the society have written an IRC bot, called BadgerBOT. It hangs out in most official society channels.
Bitlbee
Bitlbee is an IRC -> MSN gateway, allowing you to login to MSN Messenger (or other IM networks) using your IRC client.
- Server: uwcs.co.uk
- Port: 8067
Current Rules
In general, something that an operator thinks is wrong will be kicked or banned for. Kicks are warnings and you can rejoin immediately after. Bans are for repeated offences.
- Memes. Not yours.
- Do not troll.
- Do not flood (type or paste over three lines in three seconds).
- Do not use annoying scripts eg. scripts that private message x07 to someone continuously.
- Tag any ‘not safe for work’ items with nsfw or similar, even outside of office hours. This includes porn or any inappropriate material for the workplace eg. screamers.
If you behave well expect to be treated well.
